A simple search of “CBD oil” on Amazon will yield hundreds of products which claim to be just that. However, as with any online purchase, one should always research the product first. Because of the recent rise in popularity of CBD oil, many companies are looking to cash in on the trend. As a result, some are selling low-quality, and even sometimes fake, products.
Here are some things to bear in mind when buying CBD oil online, specifically from Amazon, in order to make an informed purchasing decision and avoid being duped.

DOES AMAZON SELL CBD OIL?
The answer to this question is complicated. In short, no. It is against Amazon’s policy to sell CBD oil, which is why many of the products sold on the platform are labeled “hemp oil” or “hemp extract oil” instead. This is a bit of a legal loophole as CBD oil can, in fact, be extracted from hemp plants. Therefore, calling CBD oil “hemp oil” instead is technically not false, just a little misleading.
The difference lies in which parts of the plant were used to make the oil. Quality CBD oil is made from the whole plant, including the flowers, while hemp or hemp seed oil is made by pressing the hemp seeds. Hemp seed oil has its benefits, but they’re mostly nutritional rather than therapeutic. Therefore, while both products come from the same plant, it is important to remember that different parts of the plant produce different extracts.
CBD oil can also be made from marijuana plants. Here’s where it gets confusing: while marijuana is a type of hemp plant, and therefore all marijuana can be called hemp, not all hemp is marijuana. This distinction matters: marijuana isn’t legal throughout the US under federal law, so CBD oil made from it isn’t either (read more about CBD’s legal status here). There are medical marijuana dispensaries that sell this type of CBD, but, because of the issues regarding its legality, Amazon has banned its sale on its store.
WHY YOU DON’T WANT TO BUY HEMP SEED OIL BY ACCIDENT
CBD oil and hemp oil are two widely different products. While CBD oil is believed to carry many health benefits, hemp oil has great nutritional value, akin to sunflower oil or olive oil.
They are produced in different ways, too. CBD oil is extracted from the whole hemp plant, including the flowers, while hemp seed oil is made by pressing the seeds. Therefore, hemp seed oil is not going to provide any of the benefits of CBD. Essentially, it’s just nutritious cooking oil.
HOW TO DETERMINE WHETHER A PRODUCT IS CBD OIL
Check to see if there is a CBD milligram content listed on the bottle. Reputable CBD oil distributors will tell you this information so that you can determine the proper dosage, even if the product description is changed for it to be sold on Amazon.
If the number of milligrams of CBD per serving isn’t listed, don’t buy the product. It’s very likely that it’s simple hemp seed oil instead of CBD.
LOOK AT THE BOTTLE
One of the fastest, easiest ways to tell the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil is by looking at the bottle. CBD oil bottles are small, usually 1 oz. or 2 oz., and often come with a built-in medicine dropper. This is because the CBD in the product is highly concentrated and, therefore, requires a precise dosing method.
Hemp seed oil, on the other hand, is often used for cooking, so the bottles are bigger (often 4 oz. or more). They lack a dropper, since you don’t need to precisely measure and dose cooking oil.
Check to see if the product lists “hemp extract” on the ingredients list, as this is another way that sellers are getting around Amazon’s rules. CBD is technically a hemp extract, as it’s extracted from hemp plants. Therefore, the higher the hemp extract content in the product, the more CBD there is in it.
Full-spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabinoids, including THC (albeit at minuscule quantities, under 0.3%). How do you tell if an extract is full-spectrum? The biggest indications are the words “whole-plant extract” or “terpenes” appearing on the bottle or in the product description. If this information isn’t specified, you can always ask the seller or request a lab report.
Read the reviews. If someone buys a product that didn’t contain CBD, they’re sure to leave a bad rating and review. Customer questions are usually also listed. Someone may have already asked whether it’s CBD oil or not and whether it’s full-spectrum.
ASK THE SELLER
If you have any questions about the product, ask the seller. A lab report will tell you how much CBD is in it, if any. It will also provide other important information, such as whether or not there’s THC in the product. Most reputable sellers are happy to answer questions when potential buyers message them, so if they don’t respond or send the requested lab reports, look elsewhere.
If you find a product on Amazon that has the word “CBD” in its title, it will eventually be removed, and the seller’s account will likely be banned due to Amazon’s strict policy on CBD oil.
However, this doesn’t mean that reputable sellers aren’t still using the platform – they’ve just had to get creative about how they do so. Unfortunately, as a result, there are also many companies trying to make a profit from people’s ignorance of Amazon’s policies regarding CBD.
If you bear in mind the points outlined in this article, you can find genuine CBD oil on Amazon. You just have to be careful!
